American Idol: The Cut to 9

The double elimination is always a tough show for American Idol.

But, at least we got to enjoy a variety of duets from the Idol contestants before the results.

Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery sang a touching version of “I Told You So” and then they were both quickly confirmed as safe.

Naima Adedapo sang with Jacob Lusk. It was a nice duet, very jazzy and complete with some coordinated dance moves. Ryan Seacrest announced that one of them was safe and one was in the bottom three. Jacob had his eyes closed the whole time and was announced as safe and was sent to the couches. Naima grabbed a seat on the stools, which is where we expected to see her.

We got a performance from Fantasia Burrino next and let’s just say the song topic was interesting. “Collard greens and cornbread” was the name of the tune she chose to sing. Here’s a little snippet from the lyrics, for your pleasure:

“I ain’t gon’ lie, boy you got me, outta my mind
in L-O-V-E. I go crazy when you love me; got me
acting a mess. Even got the nerve to say ya better
than my mama’s collard greens and cornbread yeah.
Collard greens, cornbread yeah.”

Next we had a trio of Pia Toscano, Thia Megia, and Haley Reinhart singing “Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry. We think Haley was trying too hard and it didn’t even seem like Thia was singing. Pia owned it, but we aren’t sure there has been a moment where we haven’t seen her own it. In true American Idol fashion, two were safe and one was in jeopardy. Pia was safe and so was Haley. Thia was sent to the stools.

We had a performance from the four remaining guys – as a band. James Durbin, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald, and Casey Abrams. It was a good performance, one of the cutest we have seen in American Idol history. They had fun and it was obvious. Of the four, one wasn’t safe. Casey was safe and told that if he knew how many votes he had of the 55,000,000 votes (yes, 55 million) that he would be stunned. James was also safe and then it was between Stefano and Paul. Paul was sent to the bottom three.

Jamie Foxx and will.i.am performed a song called “Hot Wings” from the upcoming movie, Rio. It was a chaotic performance filled with a marching band and samba dancers. We weren’t terribly impressed with the song even though both Jamie Foxx and will.i.am are great in their own rights. We were confused as to why both song titles involved food tonight on American Idol. And, also as to why will.i.am was on Idol two times this year already.

The results and announcement of which two of the three had finally arrived. We were unsure as to who it would be that was saved, but it was Paul. It was pretty obvious that Thia would be cut – her performances continued to sink each week. Naima was probably too different for American Idol. She may have her own success in the reggae scene as time moves forward.
